Nisyros island destination guide

Nisyros island

Nisyros island is known as the volcano island with beautiful traditional Greek villages. Nisyros is located 23 nautical miles from Kos island,  14 nautical miles northwest from Tilos and 32 miles from Symi island.  For this reason, you can visit Nisyros island while cruising South Dodecanese and Turkey.

Its shape is approximately round, with a diameter of about 8 km. Because it is a round dormant volcano, there are no bays where gulets can anchor. But several other islets are found in the direct vicinity, the largest of which is Yali. Yali island consists of obsidian lava domes and pumice deposits and offers crystal sea waters and some very isolated private bays.

Ideal gulet itinerary will include a swimming break on Yali island and visit Nisyros island with overnight. When you are coming to Nisyros from Kos island, your captain will stop on Yali island for swimming and relax in a bay. After lunch you will enter Pali harbour; picturesque little village situated between the main town of Mandraki and on the way to the volcano.  This small harbour offers some nice local  tavernas  where you can enjoy some food and drink while the inviting beach right next to the village is the ideal place for a refreshing swim

A visit to the volcano is a must.  The journey up the top of the island and down onto the crater gives you fantastic views.  Obviously, it is hot and in places smelly. But is a tremendous experience to see the sulphur springs hissing and feel the texture of the crater underfoot.

The main town on Nisyros island is Mandraki, a traditional Greek village with 700 inhabitants. In particular, it is impressively picturesque with old white houses on the waterfront. Whitewashed houses with flat roofs have balconies and gardens filled with flowers and climbers.
