Symi island destination guide

Symi island

Symi island is located North of Rhodes and very close to Turkey. Secluded under the peninsula of Datca, so the sea is always calm, and the wind is moderate. Different itineraries are visiting Symi. Therefore you can choose to start your gulet cruise from Bodrum and sail Turkish Aegean coast including Symi. Or South Dodecanese Greek islands itinerary where you will also visit other Greek islands. If you start your cruise in Marmaris and cruise Hisaronu gulf, Symi island can also be included. Additionally, we also offer (at the presently limited gulet are available) only South Dodecanese Greek islands cruises on Greek gulets from Rhodes or Kos.

Most of the itineraries will sail Symi island one day visiting a bay or two.  In that case, gulets are entering the evening the most impressive spot; Symi harbour.  Although if you are on a private cruise and you can decide your itinerary with your captain, we would suggest dedicating an extra day to this island. In particular, Symi island has too many bays and exciting sports to visit.

With 60kmq and 13km in maximum length is the 8th island of Dodecanese. Locals consider the town divided into distinctive areas – Yialos is the main harbour and the most popular tourist spot. Then Chorio, which is literally ‘village’, is the top town. Not to forget Pedi Bay located in the valley below Chorio with a beautiful beach. And Nimborios is the bay and settlement to the north. There is also a small settlement at Marathounda and a significant Monastery complex at Panormitis.

Thind to do on Symi island
  • Sightseeing around the town never fails to stun visitors. The welcoming and colourful island’s capital is though small.  First, you can walk the harbour, with its picturesque neoclassical mansions and traditional seaside taverns. Then Chorio,  located uphill where you can stroll around the small streets and alleys.
  • Plan a stop in Panormitis bay and its monastery.  Take your time visiting the church with its impressive icon, not to forget the ecclesiastical and folklore museums.
